There are many applications that require a paddle wheel flow meter, this is why the market has become saturated with competition. Although, there are many manufacturers of your common paddle wheel flow meter, there are not very many getting involved in corrosive applications. Many people think of chemical process applications when you mention corrosive, and this can be a misconception. Although you will require a paddle wheel flow meter that will be corrosion resistant for chemicals, there are also many other applications where you need to be careful with specifying a paddle wheel flow meter. Sea water is a corrosive application that tends to slip under the radar leading to many manufacturers supplying products that will only hold up for a couple of weeks, sometime days prior to corroding. Corrosion can not only lead to damage on the paddle wheel flow meter, but will lead to containments leaching into the water. This is a major issue if the customer is using the sea water for fish, or live stock.

The paddle wheel flow meter specified for sea water must be thermoplastic and even on the non-wetted components. The corrosion on the paddle wheel flow meter is due to the salt in the sea water attaching the metal components. The paddle wheel flow meter should have a NEMA 4X display and a windowed enclosure to prevent any sea water from entering the controller portion leading to water damage. The stainless steel bolts on the paddle wheel flow meter will also corrode due to the sea water coming in contact with them which is why we also recommend that the operator sprays them with a corrosion resistant coating.

Clearwater is one of Canada's largest lobster breeders and exporters, they keep livestock in sea water and must have a completely corrosion resistant paddle wheel flow meter.
